SN35.31 — Eradication of all Conceit

Disciples, I shall teach you the path that is conducive to the uprooting of all conceit. Listen to this.

And what, disciples, is the path conducive to the uprooting of all conceit?

Here, disciples, a disciple does not conceive in terms of the eye, does not conceive in regard to the eye, does not conceive from the eye, does not conceive the eye is mine.

He does not conceive in terms of forms … etc. …

He does not conceive in terms of eye-consciousness, does not conceive in terms of eye-contact, does not conceive in terms of the feeling arisen due to eye-contact, be it pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant; he does not conceive it as mine, in that, or from that.

Disciples, in regard to whatever one conceives, in whatever one conceives, from wherever one conceives, regarding whatever as mine one conceives, it becomes otherwise.

The world, in which beings are attached to existence, delights in becoming … etc. …

He does not conceive in terms of the tongue, does not conceive in regard to the tongue, does not conceive from the tongue, does not conceive the tongue is mine.

He does not conceive in terms of tastes … etc. …

He does not conceive in terms of tongue-consciousness, does not conceive in terms of tongue-contact.

The feeling arisen due to tongue-contact, be it pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant, he does not conceive it as mine, in that, or from that.

Disciples, in regard to whatever one conceives, in whatever one conceives, from wherever one conceives, regarding whatever as mine one conceives, it becomes otherwise.

The world, in which beings are attached to existence, delights in becoming … etc. …

He does not conceive in terms of the mind, does not conceive in regard to the mind, does not conceive from the mind, does not conceive the mind is mine.

He does not conceive in terms of mental phenomena … etc. …

He does not conceive in terms of mind-consciousness, does not conceive in terms of mind-contact.

The feeling arisen due to mind-contact, be it pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant, he does not conceive it as mine, in that, or from that.

Disciples, in regard to whatever one conceives, in whatever one conceives, from wherever one conceives, regarding whatever as mine one conceives, it becomes otherwise.

The world, in which beings are attached to existence, delights in becoming.

Disciples, to whatever extent there are aggregates, elements, and bases, he does not conceive them as mine, in that, or from that, does not conceive them at all.

Thus, not conceiving in this way, he does not cling to anything in the world. Not clinging, he is not perturbed. Being unperturbed, he personally attains final Nibbana.

He knows: Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done is done, there is no more of this state here.

This, indeed, is the path, Disciples, conducive to the removal of all speculative views.
