SN56.17 — Discourse on Ignorance

While sitting to one side, a disciple said to the Blessed One:

Venerable sir, it is said, ignorance, ignorance.

What, venerable sir, is ignorance;

and how is one caught in ignorance?

Disciple, not knowing suffering, not knowing the origin of suffering, not knowing the cessation of suffering, not knowing the path leading to the cessation of suffering:

this is called ignorance, disciple;

and this is how one is caught in ignorance.

Therefore, disciple, This is suffering should be understood … This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering should be understood.
