AN5.79 — Yodhājīvavagga - The Discourse on Future Dangers
Disciples, there are five future fears that are not yet arisen but will arise in the future. These should be understood by you; having understood them, you should strive to abandon them. What are the five?
There will be disciples who, in the future, will have an undeveloped body, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom. Those with undeveloped bodies, similar in nature, with undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom, will not be able to guide others with superior conduct, superior mind, or superior wisdom. They will also be disciples with undeveloped bodies, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom.
Thus the teachings are profound, and the discipline is profound; the discipline is profound, and the teachings are profound. This is the first future fear that is not yet arisen but will arise in the future. This should be understood by you; having understood it, you should strive to abandon it.
Furthermore there will be disciples who, in the future, will have an undeveloped body, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom. Those with undeveloped bodies, similar in nature, with undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom, will show dependence on others. They will not be able to guide others with superior conduct, superior mind, or superior wisdom. They will also be disciples with undeveloped bodies, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom.
Thus the teachings are profound, and the discipline is profound; the discipline is profound, and the teachings are profound. This is the second future fear that is not yet arisen but will arise in the future. This should be understood by you; having understood it, you should strive to abandon it.
Furthermore there will be disciples who, in the future, will have an undeveloped body, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom. Those with undeveloped bodies, similar in nature, with undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom, while discussing the Dhamma and the Vinaya, will not understand the profound teachings that they encounter.
Thus the teachings are delightful, and the discipline is delightful; the discipline is delightful, and the teachings are delightful. This is the third future danger that has not yet arisen, which will arise in the future. You should be aware of it; having been aware, you should strive to abandon it.
Furthermore there will be disciples in the future who are undeveloped in body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, and undeveloped in wisdom. These disciples, being undeveloped in body, will be similar in their undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom. When the profound discourses spoken by the Tathagata, which are deep in meaning, transcendent, and connected to emptiness, are being discussed, they will not listen, will not open their ears, will not establish their minds on anything else, and will not consider those teachings worthy of being learned or comprehended.
On the other hand, those discourses that are poetic, well-structured, with clear expressions and external meanings, spoken by the disciples, will be listened to, their ears will be opened, their minds will be established on them, and they will consider those teachings worthy of being learned and comprehended.
Thus the teachings are delightful, and the discipline is delightful; the discipline is delightful, and the teachings are delightful. This is the fourth future danger that has not yet arisen, which will arise in the future. You should be aware of it; having been aware, you should strive to abandon it.
Furthermore there will be disciples in the future who are undeveloped in body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, and undeveloped in wisdom. These disciples, being undeveloped in body, will be similar in their undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom. The elder disciples will be numerous, unrefined, and will not strive for the attainment of what is not yet attained, for the realization of what is not yet realized, and for the verification of what is not yet verified. The later generations will follow their views.
They too will be numerous, unrefined, and will not strive for the attainment of what is not yet attained, for the realization of what is not yet realized, and for the verification of what is not yet verified. Thus the teachings are delightful, and the discipline is delightful; the discipline is delightful, and the teachings are delightful. This is the fifth future danger that has not yet arisen, which will arise in the future. You should be aware of it; having been aware, you should strive to abandon it.
