AN5.176 — Pīti Sutta

Then, Anathapindika the householder, accompanied by five hundred lay followers, approached the Blessed One. Having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. As he was sitting there, the Blessed One addressed Anathapindika the householder: Householder, you have supported the community of disciples with robes, alms food, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. However you should not be satisfied merely with the thought, I have supported the community of disciples with robes, alms food, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. Therefore you should train yourself thus: How can we, from time to time, enter and dwell in the joy of seclusion? Thus should you train yourself, householder.

When this was said, the Venerable Sariputta addressed the Blessed One: Wonderful, venerable sir! Marvelous, venerable sir! How well-spoken this is by the Blessed One: Householder, you have supported the community of disciples with robes, alms food, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.

At the time, venerable sir, when a noble disciple enters and dwells in the joy of seclusion, five things do not occur to him. Whatever pain and displeasure connected with sensual pleasures he may have, that does not occur to him at that time. Whatever pleasure and joy connected with sensual pleasures he may have, that does not occur to him at that time. Whatever pain and displeasure connected with unwholesome states he may have, that does not occur to him at that time. Whatever pleasure and joy connected with unwholesome states he may have, that does not occur to him at that time. Whatever pain and displeasure connected with wholesome states he may have, that does not occur to him at that time. At the time, venerable sir, when a noble disciple enters and dwells in the joy of seclusion, these five things do not occur to him.

Excellent, excellent, Sariputta. At the time, Sariputta, when a noble disciple enters and dwells in the joy of seclusion, five things do not occur to him. Whatever pain and displeasure connected with sensual pleasures he may have, that does not occur to him at that time.

At the time when a noble disciple abides having attained joy connected with seclusion, these five states are not present in him: the pleasure and happiness connected with sensual desires are not present; the pain and displeasure connected with unwholesome states are not present; the pleasure and happiness connected with unwholesome states are not present; the pain and displeasure connected with wholesome states are not present.
